Persistent selection tool (and type) with auto use & execute
When probing a data set it would be nice to have an option where the selection tool stays active, and the pipeline knows to automatically use new selections after they're created and execute the pipeline.
Unless you're just using cell and point labels, a typical current process is to select, extract and add some further pipeline (e.g. statistics, particle pathlines...). The main problem comes when you want to probe a different piece of the data: you need to go back and choose the selection tool again and make a new selection (and maybe go to the Selection Browser and change the Selection Type if the one you want is not the default) and then go to the Pipeline Browser to the extract selection filter and "copy active selection" and then execute. It's just not a very immediate or intuitive method for interactively probing the data, especially for non-expert users.
If the active object in the Pipeline Browser has a "selection using" filter after it, it would be nice to have the option to automatically use a newly created selection and update the rest of the pipeline.
Finally, if the Selection Type is something like Global Node Ids, it would be nice to be able to set this without users having to pull out the full Selection Inspector, and also not have it switch back to the default (plain index IDs) every time a new selection is made.
