    There's both ways that are used in CAD programs (eg ProE uses the way you describe), any other 3d Program that I know (AutoCAD, PDF3D, even GoogleEarth) does it the way paraview does. What is intuitive is in this case much a matter of what you're used to.

    I agree it would be nice to have UI-Configuration options, where you can tweak the behavior, even if it's just a text file ( keyboard + mouse button bindings, 3D mouse wheel behavior, some std setup / fontsizes / whatever)
