Users have wanted this for at least 5 years (see http://www.paraview.org/pipermail/paraview/2004-September/000836.html), and it was never done. There is a user-made patch by Christian Becker that has been in Mantis for two years (see http://public.kitware.com/Bug/bug_view_page.php?bug_id=2887).256 votes
I am changing the status of this back to “under review”. Please add comments about what type of views/representations that you’d like to see supported. We cannot support all types of views. See comments for more info.
It would be nice to have a reload-button for time-dependend datasets. So you don't have to apply all your filters again if the simulation is evolved in time.175 votes
Direct visualization of NURBS --no discretization necessary!. NURBS is already a standard in computer graphics and the future of FEA (isogeometric analysis).78 votes
Till now, it's not possible to format the Cube Axes deciding Font/Size of the text, thickness of the ticks, etc ...
Font/Size of each axis' title is a very important feature: the size is usually quite big and the letters are super-imposed to the axis' lines.
Adding this feature to Paraview would enhance it a lot
We are planning an improved Cube Axis for 3.10.2 / 4.0.
Some filters can take very long to finish. Also large datasets might take forever to render. It would be great if a user could press a stop button to stop these processes without having to kill paraview.73 votes
Data format documentation is available through ONE document only, the slighlty outdated article "File Formats for VTK Version 4.2". I spent money on the paraview guide, but also nothing there. Paraview is a great program, but the documentation situation is absurd! Please help!!64 votes
Following on from:
- for transient cases employing static meshes, provide a mechanism to cache the mesh so that it is not necessary to rebuild the complete visualization pipeline47 votes
I'm trying to place engine exhuasts on a car and need to identify regions of certain pressure. Solid colours are too blurred to define precisely such regions. Contour plots are great for this but need automatic labelling as an option42 votes
It would be very useful if an option was available so that the user could save his/her current state, commands and data (including any new variables) inclusive within a single file. This would provide a unified, compressed dataset that is independent of platform being used to visualise it, not only making it portable but the user would not have to worry about the paths to the dataset and it could act as an emergency backup for the data. As far as I am aware, both Tecplot (*lpk) and Ensight have this feature available.40 votes
As found in http://www.cmake.org/pipermail/paraview/2007-October/006115.html,
when saving a state file (*.pvsm), it should be possible to have relative path files (with independancy of the directoty syntax / or \ relative to unix or windows platforms)36 votes
It could be awesome if we could use the power of the Matplotlib Qt backend for XY plot. It could really improve and enhance the usability of the XY plot module of Paraview with awesome python scripting possibility.
It takes more effort that is necessary to rescale the colour bar, i.e.
* click the colour scale editor
* untick automatically rescale
* click rescale range
* update range in new dialog window
* click rescale
* close dialog
* Remove the unnecessary extra dialog for the range (include in the main dialog window)
* Colour editor dialog could be available as a context menu from the 3D view
* Middle click and drag could select the range from the 3D view29 votes
It would be nice to have the ability to draw ellipsoids or specify a major/minor axis at each point and glyph an ellipse at each point using those axes.
There is a feature request for an ellipsoid source here:
It would be nice to have the ability to associate all kinds of Paraview actions with keyboard shortcuts. Currently, I see shortcuts only for basic actions like Open File etc.27 votes
It would be an enhancement to ParaView's output capabilities to allow for transparent backgrounds when saving data as, e.g., PNG screenshots.
Right now, there's always a rectangular bounding box in the way independent of the geometrical structure.27 votes
In some modeling software, when you are in transform mode (ie the transform filter) you can select a particular axis to translate/rotate about by pressing 'x', 'y', or 'z' before performing the operation. It is very hard to position an object in 3d without that ability. Maybe by clicking the "balls" at the end of the transform axes with different buttons you could specify that functionality.25 votes
Right now the text boxes in the GUI can display numbers of pretty much any precision. Although in general this is a good thing, it get really annoying if the boxes are displaying numbers with too much precision to fit in the text box. For example, if you rotate the camera with the mouse and then go the the Adjust Camera dialog, all the text boxes under Camaera Positions have a crazy amount of precision that makes it impossible to really read the numbers and hard to edit them. This happens in many other places in the GUI such as in the 2D widgets associated with a 3D widget and numbers generated from data like the auto generated scale factor in the Glyph panel.

It would be great to be able to save a session to a 3D pdf so that any model can be viewed by almost anyone without the need for any other viewers.20 votes
The glyph filter has the nice property which allows to scale the glyph. However, for all arrow glyphs, a better way of scaling would be to scale only the length of the arrow by a quantity instead of the whole arrow (shaft and tip thickness). This simply gives a much clearer overview if there are regions with big and small arrows in one domain.18 votes
It would be nice if the user could still use the UI while the servers are working.
